On September 1, 2023, our church became a permanent collection site for items to be distributed by Midwest Mission in Pawnee, IL. Midwest Mission is a warehouse providing resources for disaster relief, education, health, and microbusiness in the U.S. and throughout the world, showing God's love in practical ways. At this time, Gay Street UMC is the only permanent collection site in Ohio.


Our collection site is open by appointment.  To schedule an appointment contact Beth Prince at or by calling 740-694-1603.

Our church address is 18 N. Gay St., Mount Vernon, OH 43050 (park in the loading zone on Gay Street and enter the lower door). 


We are collecting the following items for distribution by Midwest Mission:

  • Cash donations from individuals and churches, with checks payable to Midwest Mission Distribution Center.

  • Completed kits that Midwest regularly distributes, such as Tornado Kits, Bed Packs, Home Care Kits, Birthing Kits, Feminine Hygiene Kits, Layette Kits, Student Kits, and Personal Dignity Kits. (Find instructions, patterns and videos online at Kits must contain only the requested items. No handprints, footprints, pawprints, advertising, patriotic images, or camouflage on fabrics or packaging. All kit items must be new.

  • Individual items that are used to make up the above kits. All kit items must be new.

  • Bicycles and sewing machines. Bicycles and electric sewing machines in working order are accepted. All treadle machines accepted.

  • Medical equipment and supplies. We accept folding walkers, crutches, canes, wheelchairs, shower chairs, and orthopedic supplies.

  • Tools. We accept new and gently used, non-electric tools.

  • Fire gear. We accept firefighting gear and equipment. Contact Midwest Mission directly for donation of firetrucks and ambulances.

  • UMCOR Kits. Midwest Mission is a cooperating depot in the UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) relief supply network. (UMCOR Hygiene Kits, UMCOR Cleaning Kits, UMCOR Feminine Hygiene Kits - All instructions online at

  • Handmade items made from specific patterns. For instructions, go to the Midwest website:

  • Vital single-item requests that are made from time to time by Midwest Mission.

Please respect the fact that we are not a "take your old junk" place. We cannot accept power tools, old or used items for kits (all kit items must be new), fabric that is camouflage, has footprints, handprints, paw prints, advertising, or patriotic images, and clothing - other than specific items requested to be sewn.
